Transforming data. Meet our Data Engineer Kesavan

Kesavan Annamali, one of our Data Engineers tells us how the variety in his role keeps each day exciting and challenging.

"My role as a Data Engineer is incredibly varied  and offers and the opportunity to blend technical problem-solving with teamwork. Typically my  day starts by checking system health and ensuring pipelines are running smoothly—if any issues pop up, we work as a team to make sure they're quickly resolved to keep data flowing. I often work with Azure tools like Azure Data Factory or Databricks to fine -tune data pipelines, transforming raw data into actionable insights.  Success is a team game and as a team, we collaborate with Finance or Risk teams to refine models or to identify new data needs which is always exciting.  Its’ rewarding to know that our work directly impacts data-driven decisions across the Bank."

Connecting the dots in Data Reporting ...

Meet Fiona Mann, our Senior Reporting Analyst who shares how her work uncovers new trends to drive innovation.

"Being a Senior Reporting Analyst is like being a detective—each new request is a unique puzzle to solve. At the start of any task, I begin with huge datasets which I then bring together to uncover trends, revealing opportunities to make Virgin Money customers even happier through data-informed decisions. Every insight we provide has the power to shape marketing strategies, operational improvements, external reporting, and more. It’s a position where analysis and ideas truly make a difference .I work with systems like SAS and Power BI, but the technical aspect, while valuable, isn’t a barrier here. I came into this role with limited experience, and I was fortunate to have a supportive team that helped me build my technical skills on the job. The most rewarding part of my work is crafting compelling stories from complex data and making it easy for people to understand. Each report is an opportunity to connect the dots and transform numbers into actionable insights."

" I work closely with teams in Data Enterprise Systems to help them understand Scrum theory and practice.  I act as the team lead, facilitator, coach and change agent, enabling the team to be the best version of themselves and ensuring we maintain a positive and productive environment. Change management and delivery is a key part of my role, working closely with the business, our infrastructure and release teams to coordinate and deliver changes to our on-premise and cloud environments. I work with teams of talented Data Engineers who work on changes to bank systems such as the Azure Data Platform and Oracle Databases. We run our day-to-day work backlogs and plans on Jira and use Miro as a collaboration tool.  Being able to work with fantastic individuals, drive out change and deliver value to the business and our customers whilst cultivating a positive and productive working environment is immensely rewarding.

From patterns to purpose

Amiee Wilson shares her perspective on her day-to-day work as a Senior Privacy Analyst and how she's grown in her role.

"Being a Senior Privacy Analyst I get to dive into data privacy, uncover patterns and ensure we keep things compliant. Each day is a mix of working with different stakeholders across the bank to understand their change initiative and provide support in all things privacy related.  There is nothing more satisfying than working with a project from the beginning identifying possible privacy risks and overcoming the challenges to find a solution that keeps our data safe and our customers confident.  Through this, I've been able to build strong relationships across several areas within the bank to embed a proactive approach to privacy by design.  I came into the role with limited experience of Sharepoint and AI tools such Copilot but I was fortunate enough to have support that helped me build my technical skills on the job. This has given me the opportunity to ensure the governance process supports the ever-evolving banking industry and regulatory requirements."
